Site Description

Located on the shores of the Pungo River, this location was very remote and aquatic. The yard was sandy-soft, with watery ditches and with nary a flowering plant to be found or vegetable patch. Lots of well-kept lawn and whatever trees allowed to stay. The backyard proved to be fairly suitable despite the strong nightly breezes. The front yard had a fairly large pecan tree. Surrounding the property were sizable stands of woods, mostly pines and the usual coastal suspects. The area had very little light pollution due to neighbors not using outside lights and the fact that the location was slightly offset from the middle of nowhere.

Comments

The first night’s weather was breezy, hot, and humid and a decent number of observations were made. Lots of tree frogs joined us to snack on our moth friends. The second night was also breezy and ended when we reached the goal of 100 species. Just in time, too, as a thunderstorm rolled through about an hour later. A variety of moth sizes were noted on both nights, and over all the turnout was decent. If I had been more adventurous I could have set up one of the sheets and lights up along a side road that had a dense stand of pines.
